An Interview with Glass Blower Scott Tribble

Recently Chief Cottonmouth had the pleasure of spending the day with one of northwests premiere artists Scott Tribble, Aka Scoz.  Scoz has been working with glass since he was 19 years old, working in all different aspects of glass.  Scoz’s attention to detail and over the top craftsmanship has secured his place as one of Washington’s finest.

Scoz’s estate is nestled at the base of Tiger Mountain, where he likes to go hiking with his dogs, and rock hunting for precious gems and stones such as Quartz and Pyrite. The estate was the perfect setting for a kick back Q and A session with the “Dragon Master” himself.

Q) Was art a big part of your childhood?

Art was a big part of my childhood, I was always playing with clay and other mediums making dragons, and mythological creatures. Art has always influenced my life in one way or another.

Q) Where did you grow up?

I grew up in the suburbs of Seattle.

Q) Who were major influences in your glass career?

About ten years ago Robert Mickelson was a big influence in my style, I really liked the work he was creating at the time.  J-red (another local northwest artist) and friend, also influenced my career, teaching me how to blow glass.

Q) What hobbies do you have besides blowing glass?

Some of my other hobbies include, hiking, rock hounding, and snowboarding different areas of the beautiful northwest.

Q) What made glass your focus?

All types of art have always been important to me, glass just seemed to be the one that paid the bills, allowing me to be an artist fulltime.

Q) Where did the name Scoz come from?

Scoz was my nickname in high school and it just stuck with me ever since. 

Scoz’s glass continues to push the boundaries of the borosilicate art movement, from his fume work on his vortex, and inception marbles, to his newest series of dragon rigs, one of which can be seen on display at our Store, in Puyallup Washington.
